Santa Cruz, CA: Memorial Day

Phillip and I drove down to Santa Cruz for the holiday. First we went to the Boardwalk (charming but it's no Coney!) and then to the much anticipated Mystery House amist the redwood forest. I am trying to make a video of the later destination but my cameraman is, er, still learning the art of the flattering shot.

Annother Saturday Comes and Goes

Without pictures, it's hard to illustrate Saturday to its full potential but it deserves an honorable mention.

I went with Kasia, Daniela, and some of Kasia's friends to see the Oakland Athletics play the Red Sox. There was an astounding number of Boston fans in attendance - primarily of the variety epitomized by House of Pain.
Note: heckling the opponent on his home turf with accusations of steroid use is not considered kosher among baseball fans. Go figure.

After a rowdy train ride back into the city Daniela and I made a quick stop to hang out downtown with Bill, an errant hippie with an expensive hotel habit. Laura briefly met us to close out the 500 Club and we hitch hiked over to the artist co-op. We learned a lot about people from their domain names; and I about the most romantic note in the world: the Schumann resonance.

Sunday was all zzzz.

SURPRISE!!! YOU ARE A GEEK!

It all came together last night for Phillip's nerd-themed surprise party at El Rio.

This is the invitation.

Boy With the Most Cake (A Labor of Love)

Here I reveal to you the secret project I had been chained to all last week: a giant birthday to jump out of at Phillip's surprise party.

The idea came to me a couple months back but only until last week did it manifest into the craft project from hell. Laura and I started building it at Stich 'n' Bitch on Tuesday night. It required several subsequent S'n'Bs which continued until about 5pm Friday night. The main challenge was creating a structure behind the thin wall of mattress pad foam (these embryonic stages are documented somewhere on Laura's camera - it isn't pretty.) We found that a taped cardboard skeleton served as the best foundation possible. Once we glued the foam to the ribs the cake started to take shape. I used fabric and ribbons from Scrap for the icing, topped with a fatal coat of spray glitter. Pipe cleaners became candles and the rest is history.

Cakemobile; Lauren made the cupcake bra for my Big Jump during her visit to SF

It was quite a scene driving from Cake and Laura's house to El Rio with the entire passenger side of the car blind spotted by the epic pastry.

Posting for the Sake of Posting

It's been a little a slow here in Online Ruby World. Excuse my terseness: No epic adventures to report. No fantastic displays of burlesque to post. No glamor here.

I've sucked myself into a project - soon to be revealed - that has been consuming my evenings/nights (which should have included an El-P show) and pretty much all of my energy.

Stay tuned!

noted

The Times published a great article about NYC burlesque this weekend.

Washington, DC: Convention Time

Phewph. It's been a while - but I'm not without worthy excuses!

My night of fun with Daniela and Erin was put on last Wednesday night on account of an emergency root canal (my second, for those of you who recall my best Argentine souvenir: a whitest of white dental implant!! eww/oww!)

Early Thursday morning my boss and I left for DC for the union's National Convention. On top of all of the prep work that goes into this long weekend, the whole event is quite exhausting - compounded by the fact that our 7AM start times felt much earlier for those of us traveling from the west coast. I was fortunate to room with one of the organizers from our Puerto Rico chapter who brought me up to speed on all of the chismoso labor politics on the island. Another highlight was seeing Andy Stern speak at the closing of the convention. Lovehim-hatehim, he is still a moving orator and I get totally starstruck by labor movement celebrities!

Dennis Rivera addressing the assembly; impromptu Bhangra (I felt like I was at WSH)!

Grrrrrrrrr!!!

Will someone send Dov Cherney to prison already??

Stich 'n' Bitch

Before biking over to Potrero Phillip and I stopped for a cocktail - aka well margaritas - at El Rio around the corner. I've been here several times but never really appreciated the spirit of this bar. While the 5hundo Club strikes a homesick chord, El Rio embodies much of my spirit in one fine facility: the drinks are cheap, the decor is vulgar, there is weekly burlesque, and it's pretty gay. I will be making point to swing by more often, especially since they allow dogs to run around on the patio.

After a quick happy hour pit stop I went over to Laura and Cake's house for Laura's Bellingham import: Stitch 'n' Bitch, a weekly meeting of arts and crafts. As the title loosely suggests, friends gather together to work on whatever projects they are working on and chat about whatever thoughts are on their minds. Tonight I worked on my secret project and painted a self portrait for Cake and Josh's SF0 task. My rendering was pathetic but the others (ASG/BFs!!) fared pretty well. Laura also finished her coconut bra and started a few t-shirt dresses.

Jar busy with the evening's pièce de résistance

Now that Laura has created the space, I have a lot of object gathering to do before next Tuesday. (All will be revealed within the fortnight - shhhhhh!)

Empty Nest

Last night I took the last member of the Midnight Society to the airport. It was a sad moment followed by many sad moments that came with the realization that the most fun people in the world are no longer coupled with the most fun city in the world. It's lonely with out the frens.

We had an amazing weekend. We painted the town red. We maxed our physical capacity to ingest so many substances over such a short period of time. I lost my ATM card, my computer screen is smashed, and I have neither seratonin nor money to get through the week. I can't wait for our next adventure.

Pictures to follow upon Katie's return from Napa.

El Día Después: Feliz Cinco de Mayo

Below is the debut of my Frida Kahlo aka 'Ningun Ser Humano es Ilegal' number, choreographed to Puro Teatro by La Lupe. Thank you to everyone who came out and especially to Lauren for making a beautiful prop painting.

The Show Must Go On

Last night I performed my Bearded Lady number again at our Stage Werx show. At first I was really disappointed because I messed up a part of the routine and had to improvise the entire middle portion of the song. I didn't do my best. Seeing Laura and Katie in the audience made me feel better - and guzzling margaritas with them afterwards made me feel great. My two ASGFs stayed for the whole show (the are in senior thesis crunch time) and even left with a pair of tassels each. We went to a corny Mexican bar that was featuring renditions of bastardized Shakira karaoke. We did not sing.

On account of the prep time commanded by their senior show and also all of the fun things to do this weekend we decided to cancel our Synchro de Mayo trip. While I am sad about this I am really looking forward to spending the weekend in the city with Lauren.

Happy May Day!

Happy International Workers' Day. Join me and the rest of the world at a rally for immigrants' rights at Dolores Park at 3:00PM.
