According to research put out by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, union density grew by . 1 percent in 2007. Though this number is small (310,000 new members), it is the first increase since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracing this date in 1983.

The Truth Is Out There
Tomorrow night Phillip and I plan to drive down to Roswell, NM and then leave for Truth or Consequences, NM on Saturday evening. I've been consulting several maps in preparation for the trip and noticed something fishy.
Exhibit A:

Notice that in Exhibit A highway 380 pulls north around Holloman Airforce Base (the name of the giant unmarked gray blob, I think.) However, in Exhibit B, highway 380 cuts though the Base. One thought is that the second map (from a relatively low-traffic site) is less monitored than Google Maps, and therefore its accuracy has slid under the radar of censorship. Thoughts?
Santa Fe, NM: at Night
About ten years ago the City of Santa Fe passed an ordinance limiting light pollution. As a result many of the buildings around the plaza use luminaries to illuminate the streets. Several other cities in the state have adopted similar policies. The overall effect is quite charming:

Today we wrapped up our final day of the course. Everyone left pretty energized and ready to use the newfound information on the ground. For many of us, the most valuable aspect of the training this week was the opportunity to connect with folks from across the movement: Gary from IOUE in Arizona, Will from the Mariners' out of NOLA, Laura from CSEA in San Diego, Laura from IFPTE representing Boeing workers, TK from Ankorage with the state police, and Cesar organizing the taxi workers in Las Vegas. I'm already planning on spending a day with Cesar's people when we go down to Vegas in a few weeks and I told Will I'd get in touch when I go down to NOLA to see Dine and Gams. I know I learned a lot from everyone; I think they learned from me too.
